While rock climbing with my son at Movement Climbing in Denver, I noticed I had missed a call from area code 818.
If you follow the Ninja Warrior space you now 818 is where Ninja Warrior calls from. I immediately called back and let Peter know that I noticed the missed call and was calling him back.
Peter informed me that my voicemail was full and he couldn't leave a message. Then he invited me to compete in Tacoma for American Ninja Warrior season 11!
The only catch was that we had a trip booked to Cabo in Mexico for my Uncle in law's 50th birthday. All expenses were paid for at a super nice resort. So I asked Peter about the possibility of changing the location to Cincinnati, since I knew that was the city following Tacoma. Peter informed me that he could put in the request, but it wasn't a sure thing. I told him to put in the request but if it came down to it, I would cancel the trip and go, Ninja Warrior was just too important to miss! I had been training dedicated for a year and half focused on making this a possibility. I wasn't going to let that slip.
I was super excited and had a smile on my face from ear to ear. Now it was real! All the thoughts running through my head and the people I wanted to tell. Naturally I called my Mom first. I followed with a variety of friends and family that have been my strongest supporters in this mission.
My family is mainly living in Oregon, so Tacoma is much more appealing for them than Cincinnati. After a couple days of weighing the pluses and minuses, I canceled the flight to Cabo and booked some tickets to Tacoma Washington.
Now the unanswered question I have is how many people can I have come with me? How many tickets will they allow me to have? With this question unanswered for over a week it was great to see how much support I was getting from the community and how many people wanted to come watch me compete.
One of the greatest parts of getting selected to compete in ANW is how many lives it makes a positive impact on. People that I don't know started coming out of the woodwork sharing their excitement and support for my path.
I hope I can use this tool to make a positive impact on peoples' lives and get them out playing and having fun!
We don't stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing!
